Mentally and Physically Mastering Marksmanship.
Challenges
.
- Hi. My name is Isaac Ammons.
- I am going to discuss my senior project with you. Beginning with my,
- Research Paper
- Physical Project
- What I Learned
- Successes
- Challenges
- Mentor Reflection
- Conclusion
- Firearms have been a crucial part of history. To begin understanding their impact I felt that it was best to begin with the very earliest glimpses of modern weaponism.
- In addition to the history of firearms, throughout my paper I also covered their development and the safety and care required to handle them.
- The origins of gunpowder are unknown but it is believed to have been developed in China, Turkey or Europe. It is also widely accepted that Franciscan Monk Roger Bacon is responsible for creating the exploding powder.
- The first firearm was developed in 1350 and was commonly referred to as a hand gonnie or hand cannon.
- During my physical project I learned that Practice is the only highway to experience. I spent many hours at the Shooting range as well as safe more applicable locations practicing for accuracy and it became overwhelmingly apparent that you can’t become an expert overnight.
- Because of this I now take the strong stand that the best way to gauge the expertise of a marksmanship is by their years of experience.
- Maintenance is a critical aspect of being a proficient safe marksman as well
- An ill maintained weapon I have learned can be more dangerous than having no gun at all.
- I spent a good portion of my time researching various guns in order to gain a better knowledge of their value and origin. I was successfully able to value one of my own guns at a surprisingly high price.
- Zeroing in my firearm was an aspect of my project that was surprisingly easy with the right coaching.
- This is a video I compiled of some of the hours I spent practicing my Marksmanship.
- Trigger pull- 1 inch in variation at the barrel can pull your shot off by close to 5 inches at the target depending on the distance of the shot.
- Support- Supporting your gun whether by body or on a solid object it’s important to make sure that it is steady and will not re adjust upon recoil of the gun.
- Breath control- Is also very important it is a way to fine tune your shot for maximum accuracy. (squeeze the trigger on “exhale”)
- Adjusting for wind and drop- This was something I was not able to adjust very accurately due to my lack of experience.
- Correct sight alignment- Understanding your sight is something that must be handled on a case by case basis I used several different iron sights as well as scopes and had to acquaint myself with each one individually.
- Overall I was very proud of…
- Hour 1 to 15 (improvements).
- Knowledge gain.
- Experience gain.
- Career insights.
Challenges
- Lack of Experience.
- Mindset.
- Price.
- Time. (2 jobs and school)
- If I were to do something differently…
- Began investing hours in project much earlier. (Practice makes perfect)
- Donnie Gray was a wonderful mentor.
- I gained an abundance of knowledge form Donne.
- Including how to and the importance of maintaining constant awareness of the firearm.
- I learned that Responsibility must be a characteristic of the carrier of any firearm.
- And that a gun requires attention and maintenance to function properly when it’s needed.
- I feel like firearms will defiantly be a part of my future.
- I would like to continue to explore careers in gunsmithing and possibly weapons engineering.
